The latest iPhone launched is iPhone 12 and is priced at Rs 80,000 in India.
- Can I buy it? Yes, of course.
- Will I buy it? Not a chance.
Having the money doesn't always have to mean that you need to splurge it. When I buy something, I look on the 'value for money' part. With iPhones, I don't see any. The features I want in a phone is easily available on an Android phone which is priced four time cheaper. So why would I go for a more expensive phone?
The iPhone 12 would cost me around 7 weeks of my salary, a little less than two months. However it is very less compared to the total savings I have and if I wanted, I could have bought it. But I don't see any return on investment on it. So I would prefer not to waste my money on it.
I usually use my phones for 4 years. The last two smartphones I owned was used for four years and this one is currently in its third year and still going strong. With iPhones, the longevity is much less. Very rarely would you find people using an old model of iPhone from 3/4 years back and even if they did, the features on it would be outdated now. Plus every iOS release further slows down your iOS device, indirectly forcing you to buy a new iPhone. I wouldn't spend my money on such a device.
Then what happened with my friend
Yeah I can buy the latest iPhone 12 with my current salary ( Without the EMI) . Its just about a month's salary for me .
But being a value investor I always want the product I buy is “Value for Money” and newly launched Iphone are not at all value for money. Let me prove it with below example.
iPhone 11:
Iphone 11 (128Gb) was launched at whopping ₹73600 last year , one of my friend bought the same iPhone in ongoing festive sales at less than 50k .(₹46449 to be precise , this includes bank offer and exchange of ₹4800)
Just see the amount of margin apple has in its products, even after selling same product 20k cheaper Apple is still making profit (Otherwise they won't have lowered the prices this much) .
So coming to the answer I definitely can buy but will wait for the next year Big Billion Day sale/ Great Indian Festival sale to buy as it will be more value for money then.
Thanks for reading. Stay healthy, be safe.
Edit 1: Thanks a lot guys for the upvotes, this is my first answer which got more than 1L views. Many people are saying 50k phone can never be value for money, but according to me value not necessarily means only economic value like owning a car which is a depreciating asset may not be worth for many , but if it's saving lot of your time it is value for money.
Likewise if you are in a bussiness where “Jo dikhta h vahi bikta hai” Iphone is important as many will judge you based on your gadgets, for them getting this piece of metal at 48k is actually value for money which will help them in their business to get high ticket clients.
